9/11 memorial, “Postcards” is a true gift to victim’s families and all Staten Islanders

By David L. Businelli

The dedication of the Staten Island Sept. 11th Memorial was a moving ceremony. The memorial, “Postcards”, is an excellent, world-class work of architecture, a true gift, to the families of the victims in particular, and to all residents of Staten Island in general.

Borough President James Molinaro’s dedication to Staten Island and those that we lost was the vision, and architect Masayuki Sono made the vision a reality.

The design is poetic, radical and inspiring; it is a work that truly has meaning, and, as Mr. Sono said, that meaning will be different for different people.

It has a powerful presence on the site, and visitors can feel its power–the power to remember; the power to look forward.

It is everything that a work of architecture should be, from both aesthetic and technical points. It is a perfect example of how architecture and the architect, can affect our daily lives.

In my opinion, “Postcards” will be as influential as Maya Lin’s design for the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial in Washington, D.C., has been.
